Installing a Skylight
1. Wait for clear dry weather to install your skylight. 2. Check for any wiring or piping obstructions before choosing a spot for the skylight.
#1 Select a skylight Fixed models allow light Venting models allow light and fresh air The light shaft can be straight, splayed, or angled
- Tape measure
- Fixed skylight
- Skylight venting
- Skylight flashing kit
#2 Measure and cut the ceiling Mark a straight and square outline on the ceiling Cut out the drywall Cut joists to fit the light shaft Frame with jack studs and single or double headers to restore structural integrity
- Carpenter's square
- Chalkline
- Pencil
- Plumb bob
- Drywall saw
- Utility knife
- Drill and bits
#3 Measure and cut the roof Mark a straight and square outline on the roof Cut out roofing materials Cut rafters to fit the skylight Frame with jack studs and single or double headers to restore structural integrity
- 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 for framing
- Jig saw
- Circular saw
- Screws or nails
- Hammer
#4 Install the skylight Apply roof cement around perimeter of opening Install skylight per directions Nail flashing to roof and seal all joints and nail heads Cut new shingles to fit around skylight and over flashing Don't be shy about using a lot of roof cement

- Roof shingles
- Roofing nails
- Galvanized screws
#5 Finishing touches Frame in the light shaft Cover with drywall Install corner beads and finish Prime and paint to complete the job
