Installing a Whole House Fan
1. A whole house fan can cool your home without the expense of air conditioning. 2. It pulls cool outside air into the house through open windows. 3. It pushes hot stale air out through the attic and roof vents.
#1 Plan location of fan Calculate size of fan needed for your home Multiply square footage of home by the ceiling height to determine cubic feet Fan CFM rating should be almost half of your cu ft
- Tape measure
- 24" 3800 CFM Direct Drive fan
- 30" 5800 CFM Direct Drive Fan
- 30" 6000 CFM Belt Fan
#2 Mark and cut the opening Center fan over three joists in an upstairs hall Find and mark middle joist Use a template centered on middle joist to mark perimeter of opening Cut drywall along perimeter Do not cut the middle joist
- Carpenters square
- Straight edge
- Utility knife
- Drywall saw
- Jigsaw
- Pencil
#3 Run the wiring Turn off power Cut hole for wall switch and mount old work box Run power wire to switch box Run fan wire from switch box to fan location
- Wire strippers
- Old work switch box
- 14/2 or 12/2 wire
- Wire staples
- Fish tape
- Electrical tape
#4 Assemble and install fan Attach angle brackets to fan Prepare skirts for fan base Center the fan over opening and screw in place Install skirt material

#5 Make wiring connections Connect motor to fan wire Connect fan wire to switch Connect switch to power
#6 Finishing touches Install switch and plate cover Mount louvers to fan opening Turn on power and test unit
